Here is my friend Nick reading to the younger kids. Fourth graders in Ms. Pryor and Ms. Diviacchi's classes participated in the Heifer International Read to Feed program and earned $153 for reading to our younger kids! GREAT JOB fourth graders!

We have heard some pretty SPOOKY stories in the library this week!  Fourth graders were treated to one of my favorites, The Surprise Guest by R. L. Stine.  Fifth graders got spooked with a rat story by Bram Stoker, The Judge's House.  And it was a rumble with pumpkins, skeletons and scary Miss Mary for the younger kids!

A BIG DAY WITH BIG NATE

Well, our third graders sure got a treat today and met with Lincoln Peirce, author of the
Big Nate Books. Even Dr. Roberts stopped by to learn how to draw a cool comic!

Monday we will be meeting Lincoln Peirce, author of the Big Nate Books. We will be the first to get our hands on his new book, Big Nate Strikes Again! Whoopee!

With Walk to School Week in full swing, we thought it would be a great time to share some information to kindergarten and first graders about how to safely navigate our busy roads!  The kids  also learned that Mann has a nice collection of books about robots and inventions!

Walk to School and Earn $5000 for Our School

October is International Walk to School Month and Mann School is up for the challenge! For the entire month, Horace Mann School students and their families can help their schools win one of five $5,000 grants – simply by walking or bicycling to school!

Parents are invited to sign up online for the Walk to School Challenge at www.facebook.com/greenworks, and log their families' walking or bicycling trips on behalf of their school. The five schools with the highest levels of participation will be eligible to win a $5,000 grant. Frequent walkers and bicyclists can also earn individual prizes, ranging from green shoelaces to reusable water bottles. Green Works® by Clorox has partnered with the Sierra Club to sponsor this exciting challenge.

Thanks to all that got their birthday books in September!

Marianne Malone tells us to focus on working hard!

On Monday fourth and fifth graders learned that it is HARD WORK to get a book published! Author Marianne Malone shared her writing experiences with us and we found that she spent FIVE YEARS from start to finish getting her book, The Sixty-Eight Rooms published! Wow! Now a research paper will not be so daunting!

Peter Brown a huge hit with 1st and 2nd graders!

What a wonderful visit we had from author Peter Brown. First and Second graders had a blast hearing about how fun it is to be an author/illustrator!

Help us support Heifer International by joining Read to Feed! Look for a brochure that came home with your child! Encourage your kids to find creative ways of earning money! Kudos to Grace, Ryan and Olivia for hosting a lemonade stand to benefit Heifer!

Great News! I just "booked" the author Marianne Malone to come to Mann on September 20th! Her new book, The Sixty-Eight Rooms, is a mystery set in the Thorne Room exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. Check out the "Author" tab on this blog to learn more about this author and the Thorne Miniature Rooms!
